More about the "Young Māori Poetry" Mail Club

Mihikeita Ngata is a māmā, business owner, artist, and aspiring writer - her illustrated pukapuka "Nau Mai Ki Te Ao" is one of few black and white Reo Māori books for babies, which now features in 56+ libraries across Aotearoa.
The "Young Māori Poetry" mail club is a personal passion project by Mihikeita Ngata that has developed out of hapūtanga and a want to progress writing pursuits outside of mainstream pathways, and in a way that felt inclusive of writing poetry, letters, illustrating, creating digital art and more - channeling these feelings into a monthly themed mail club felt like a great opportunity to practice consistency, whilst also allowing for change.
The name of this mail club is inspired by one of her tīpuna koroua who was a founding member of the "Young Māori Party" in 1909. Members were like minded in their upbringing, their unwavering love for their people, their foresight, and political beliefs. However, outside of the group, each had their own interests they explored in different ways.
For Mihikeita, this kaupapa is about honouring the interests and creative pursuits of those who came before her, by and utilising that same connection to our culture through the arts.
